According to an analysis conducted by Mastercard, the appeal of the Italian territory has increased in the first six months of the year, with an overall 21% increase in tourist expenditure since the same period in 2023. Domestic and international travel flows increased similarly (36% and 64%, respectively). According to the newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, the Germans continue to favor Italy as their preferred destination, with the Americans, Swiss, British, and French following in that order. However, growth for Germans and Swiss has been restrained in comparison to previous years, although inflows of British and Americans have increased (+9% compared to 2023), as has a rise in French tourists (+22% compared to 2023). On a territorial level, Veneto is confirmed as the region with the highest international tourist flows, with +32% of foreign travelers, a weight of international tourism of 71% of the total (higher than the Italian average of 64%), with Germans and Austrians in first and second place, and Venice accounting for more than half of regional tourism. Among the primary categories of spending by foreigners in the lagoon city, the so-called experiential economy predominates, with restaurants, pubs, and hotels among the most popular things. Last July, the five most important spending corridors for Venice were Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the United States, and France, with American tourists leading the way with a year-on-year growth rate of +12.3%. The data from Mastercard indicates that the experience economy, which encompasses the phenomenon of roots tourism, is now a global certainty that is propelling the economy. European consumers continue to prioritize experiences that have accounted for 22% of the total spend, a percentage that is substantially higher than it was prior to the pandemic.
