During the intense rainstorm that hit Rome yesterday afternoon lightning struck the Arch of Constantine causing some fragments to fall. In a note, the Colosseum Archaeological Park explains that "the recovery intervention carried out by the technicians was timely. Our officials arrived on site immediately after the lightning struck. All the fragments were recovered and placed safely.” Damage assessments have already begun, and further analysis will continue. "The power of rainstorm was sudden and was not foreseen by any meteorological bulletin", explained the Capitol Environment Councillor Sabrina Alfonsi, underlining that at 2.30 pm, before the downpour, the Civil Protection was still struggling with the extinguishing of some fire outbreaks. Rain, wind, thunder and lightning: first yesterday morning and then, more significantly, in the afternoon, the capital was hit by sudden bad weather which poured over 60 millimeters of rain onto the streets, the same amount that usually falls in an entire autumn month.
