Clio Napolitano, the wife of former President Giorgio Napolitano, who passed away in September 2023, has died in Rome after a long illness. She would have turned 90 in November. Reserved and private, she disliked security and restrictions, always avoiding ceremonies and official cars during the 9 years she spent alongside her presidential husband. Born in Chiaravalle, in the province of Ancona, Clio Napolitano was set to turn 90 on November 10. The former First Lady passed away less than a year after her husband’s death, who lived to be 98. After graduating from the classical high school in Jesi, Clio Maria Bottoni, her maiden name, went on to earn a law degree from the University of Naples Federico II, where she met her future husband, Giorgio Napolitano. As Giorgio Napolitano began his parliamentary career, Clio Napolitano worked in a law firm. The couple married in 1959 in a civil ceremony at the Campidoglio, in line with the customs of Italian Communist Party officials. They had two children, Giovanni (born in 1961) and Giulio (born in 1969).
