The Cosenza Assize Court has handed down the sentence in the trial for the death of Donato "Denis" Bergamini, which occurred on November 18, 1989, on Highway 106 in Roseto Spulico. Isabella Internò, a defendant in the murder of the former soccer player boyfriend, was sentenced to 16 years in prison. "I just want to say that I'm innocent and I didn't commit anything. I swear before God. God is the only witness I can't have by my side," the woman had said at the end of the prosecution and defense rebuttals. The sentence was read by the presiding judge after an eight-hour court session. The judges scaled back the prosecution's request, 23 years, granting mitigating factors prevailing over aggravating factors. The defendant attended the reading of the device alongside her attorneys. The Court then sentenced Internò to perpetual disqualification from public office and civil rights for the duration of her sentence. The defendant was then ordered to pay damages to be quantified separately. Bergamini died on November 18, 1989, 35 years ago. After the player's body was found on State Highway 106 near Roseto Capo Spulico Castle, initial investigations closed with the hypothesis of suicide. According to investigators, the 27-year-old had taken his own life by throwing himself under a truck. The case had then been reopened by the Castrovillari prosecutor's office twice-the last time in 2017 - but following the trail of murder.
