An ISPI institute survey shows that despite the uncertainty (more than a third of respondents say they do not know how to answer), Italians seem to think that it is Israel as a whole and especially the current Netanyahu government that bears the greatest responsibility for both Gaza (35% adding both options) and Lebanon (32%). Of the situation in Gaza, Hamas, on the other hand, is held responsible by 15% of respondents, while Hezbollah is held primarily responsible for the extension of the war to Lebanon by 17% of respondents. The responses also highlight that with respect to the war in Gaza and Lebanon, responsibility lies not so much with the context as with specific actors: the Netanyahu government on the one hand (indicated by almost two-thirds of Italians who identify Israel as the main responsibility for today's situation), and Hamas/Hezbollah on the other (indicated in more than 70% of responses that instead "exonerate" Israel). As many as 4 out of 10 Italians are convinced that Israel should have sought a compromise with Hezbollah. Much lower are the preferences for the option of striking Hezbollah remotely or, even, invading southern Lebanon - which then happened soon after the poll was conducted.
