A RAI crew was attacked in Lebanon yesterday, and the local driver, Ahmad Akil Hamzeh, died after a heart attack. Reporter Lucia Goracci of Tg3 and cameraman Marco Nicois were present on the scene and described those anxious moments: "We were in the village of Jiyeh, north of Sidon, at the site of the bombing two nights ago", explains the journalist. Our presence had been known to the local Hezbollah, we were recording without incident, and locals were talking to us. However, a man approached and attempted to steal the camera from Nicois. We shielded Marco, then returned to the car, preparing to drive away swiftly, but others appeared and began pushing the vehicle. The first man attempted to throw a heavy stone at us; some stopped him, while others incited him. We drove away swiftly; nevertheless, this man appeared to be pursuing us, and when Ahmad, our driver, stopped at a petrol station outside Jiyeh, he jumped on top of us: he took Ahmad's keys and attempted to smash Marco's camera by entering through the open windows, while no one came to rescue us". "When Ahmad", continues Lucia Goracci, "tried to calm him down by getting out of the car, that's when he collapsed to the ground". "We followed the ambulance, and they told us that he had died after prolonged attempts to revive him. Ahmad had worked with the Beirut office of Rai in Jerusalem for several years, and Marco and I are at a loss for words to describe his deep humanity and immense kindness," the journalist recounts emotionally.
