A new theory calls Christopher Columbus' Genoese origins into question. A documentary named "Colon ADN. Su verdadero origen" (Colombo DNA: His true origin) is sparking dispute in the Spanish scientific community, with some believing that the great navigator was of Spanish descent with Jewish ancestry. A 20-year study undertaken by forensic physician José Antonio Llorente of the University of Granada suggests that Columbus was a Sephardic Jew, possibly from Valencia, Catalonia, or the Balearic Islands. The inquiry was based on an examination of the navigator's bone remains, which were preserved at the Cathedral of Seville and compared to those of known relatives and descendants. The remains of his son Hernando and brother Diego were also studied, which the experts believe supports the notion of his Spanish origins.
