Siena and Sienese art of the 14th century are featured in an exhibition that opened in recent days in New York. It is entitled "Siena: The Great Season of Painting, 1300-1350," and can be visited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. "I am happy that one of the most important and prestigious museums in the world has decided to host this exhibition, which recognizes and brings new light to the extraordinary contribution that Siena of the first half of the 14th century made to the history of world art," commented the ambassador of Italy to the United States, Mariangela Zappia. "The American public will be able to discover and appreciate another wonderful glimpse of our inimitable History. I am grateful to Siena and Tuscany for investing resources and passion in this beautiful achievement”. The exhibition, curated by experts from the Metropolitan Museum and the National Gallery in London, is divided into twelve sections that explore themes related to geography, artists and Siena's importance as a center of artistic innovation before the Renaissance. "In just a few decades, a group of artists such as Duccio, Simone Martini and the Lorenzetti brothers," said Italy's consul general in New York, Fabrizio Di Michele, “created masterpieces of unparalleled beauty all collected here together in a masterful way. We are deeply grateful to the curators of the Met who enthusiastically worked for so many years on this ambitious project, together with the municipalities of Siena and Arezzo and numerous American and European picture galleries”.
