Travelers on the highway between Bolzano and Trento this afternoon were told to exit at the Egna toll booth and continue on the state road, despite the fact that the Brenner Motorway was fully passable. The suggestion came from Google Maps, which reported a "phantom closure" on the A22. In fact, the application indicated problems along that section of the highway, but as confirmed by the company that manages the road, the reported inconveniences were not to be found in reality. The only ongoing work involved maintenance work on the road surface, which involves narrowing the carriageway, but there are no total closures. The incident is reminiscent of what happened last spring, when Google Maps mistakenly reported a Brenner highway closure between Sterzing and the state border for an entire day. In that case, too, there was no closure, but many motorists had invaded the town and the provincial road following the wrong directions from the navigator.
