Four hikers lost their lives in the Alps on a tragic weekend. The victims - three men and one woman - fell from different peaks in Veneto, Trentino and Piedmont. Two mountaineers died in separate accidents about an hour apart in the Belluno mountains. In Val di Zoldo, a man died around 1 p.m., while a woman lost her life on Croda dei Toni, in the municipality of Auronzo. In the first case, 118 was alerted by a group who, being on the summit of the Sfornioi, heard shouts and the sound of boulders. The SUEM helicopter made an initial search round without success. After receiving more precise directions, the helicopter returned and spotted a lifeless body in a rocky chimney, about a hundred meters from the summit. In Auronzo di Cadore (BL), however, it was the climbing partner who raised the alarm. The two were descending the Drasch route when the man, positioned lower down, saw his companion overtake him and plummet into the gully below. The third victim is a 26-year-old hiker, a resident of Nogara, in the province of Verona. The young man fell along the Val del Rì ferrata, above Mezzolombardo, in Trentino. Alone, he was hiking the first part of the route; shortly after the second suspension bridge, he lost his balance and plunged into the gorge, falling some 30 meters to the stream bed. A fourth hiker, 52-year-old Edi Zavatti, died falling from the summit of Rocciamelone, about 3,500 meters above sea level in the Susa Valley (TO). Zavatti, a great connoisseur of the mountains, was seen falling by other hikers who immediately contacted Mountain Rescue. Rescuers encountered difficulties in locating the body, which was eventually found about 400 meters further down the trail in a particularly impassable area.
