Observers have long noted a growing interest in high-tech recycling and a preference for safe second-hand goods. Interest is also growing in Italy, according to statistics supplied by CertiDeal, a company that sells refurbished electrical goods and commissioned an Ipsos survey. 92% of respondents (poll conducted on September 20-21, 2024, with a panel of a thousand respondents aged 18 to 65 reflecting the Italian adult population) stated they understand what a refurbished smartphone is and its benefits, while 60% said they have either purchased one or want to do so. Why? Savings came in top position (as mentioned by 50% of respondents). Indeed, a refurbished high-quality smartphone might cost 30% to 60% less than a new one. On the other hand, 14% of respondents are drawn to the prospect of purchasing a high-end model, which is sometimes unachievable if new. For example, the highest model of Apple's iPhone costs 1,989 euros, the equivalent of a laptop. The percentage of people who want to buy a reconditioned product for environmental reasons is high: up to 44% believe that the choice contributes to sustainable development because batteries are reused. 83% of those who completed the purchase reported being very or very satisfied with the recycled device and intending to repeat the process.
