Lonigo, in the province of Vicenza, is the landmark center of the so-called "Area Berica", located at the foot of the Berici Mountains, rising in an area crossed by the Guà river, the Togna stream and the Acquetta stream. A fertile territory inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the finds in the caves of Lumignano, Mossano and Broion Caves. The profile and shape of the town at present are the result of its historical events, such as the Rocca Pisana, Villa Giovannelli (whose facade dominates the plain), the dome of the cathedral, the Torrione and the bell tower of the Chiesa Vecchia. All that remains of the fortress now are a few towers, arranged in such a way that we can see that the area occupied by Lonigo Castle was very large. In its place today are the Cathedral, Cassia Palace and Mugna Palace, the seat of the municipal administration, as well as a few houses. In addition to the cathedral and the Chiesa Vecchia, the village offers a visit to the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer, a majestic 19th-century church erected in neo-Romanesque forms, and the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dei Miracoli, in the hamlet of Madonna, that is, a chapel flanked in 1488-1501 by a Gothic church with a Lombardesque facade. Also worth seeing are the St. Daniel Complex and the Municipal Theater, finished restoration in 1993, which hosts concerts, operas, and plays. Special mention for the Ornithological Museum, which is one of the most prestigious collections from the historical period between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Finally, it is worth mentioning the Municipal Hippodrome, whose name recalls the ancient Horse Fair, which has become a sample fair since 1986, and which enlivens the village every year on March 25. To this day the fair still attracts breeders, visitors and returning emigrants to their homes, positioning itself as a regional reference point for trade, agricultural innovation and the promotion of local products. Other popular events include: the fair of St. James, attested since 1100, which takes place on July 25; the Way of the Cross, which is celebrated on Good Friday through the city streets; and the feast of St. Anthony, celebrated on June 13 with a procession. Lonigo is also a major hub in agribusiness, particularly because the municipality falls within the production area of the PDO Veneto Berico-Euganeo ham. These cultural and religious events make Lonigo a perfect place to delve into the traditions and cultural roots of the Veneto region. Lonigo, in fact, is ready to welcome visitors with its symbols of the past to admire that have nothing to envy from other better-known cities.
