In 2024, the entire value of shareholdings in Italian joint-stock companies reached 661 billion euros, up 14.31% from 578 billion in 2023, or about 100 billion more in a year. Foreign investors maintained their dominant position, with total holdings of €319 billion, up 20.49% year on year and 48.28% of the total. Households also raised their portion of overall ownership from 70 to 86 billion euros, representing a 23.31% gain or around 16 billion more. Banks and insurance businesses both saw 5.48% and 19.75% gains, respectively, while social security institutions saw a 7.34% fall. This is the conclusion of a report by the Unimpresa Study Center, which indicates that the total value of shareholdings in joint-stock companies in Italy increased to 3,408 billion euros in 2024, an increase of 98 billion compared to 2023, up 2.95%. Companies saw the most substantial shift, increasing their share by 20.07% and rising from 484 billion to 581 billion euros. On the contrary, while households remained the largest category, accounting for 1,466 billion, their overall proportion fell by 43 billion, to 43.02% of the total. Banks also decreased by 7.86%, from 457 to 422 billion euros. On the other side, international investors increased their presence by 11.61%, reaching 726 billion euros, or 21.30% of the total.
