Since 2020, Italy has about 652 thousand fewer residents. In the same period, however, the growth of those who have decided to reside outside the national borders continues (+11.8% since 2020). Today, the community of nationals and citizens residing abroad consists of more than 6 million 134 thousand: for a long time, the only Italy to grow continues to be only those who have chosen abroad to live. This is what emerges from the Migrantes Foundation's Italians in the World Report 2024, presented yesterday morning in Rome. From 2006 to 2024, the AIRE population almost doubled (97.5%) from 3.1 to over 6.1 million. Women, however, more than doubled in the same time frame from over 1.4 million to the current 2,961,160 (+106.3%). In 2024, 54.2% of the 6.1 million AIRE enrollees are in Europe (more than 3.3 million, including more than 2.5 million in the EU-15) and 40.6 percent in America (more than 2.4 million, including 2 million in Central and South America). This is followed by: more than 167,000 in Oceania (2.7%), more than 78,000 in Asia (1.3%) and 70,000 in Africa (1.1%). Europe is confirmed as the continent where the Italian community most dedicated to circular mobility within EU countries lives permanently: since 2020, 332 thousand compatriots have moved to the EU, and to these we need to add another 11 thousand Italian citizens and nationals who have moved their residence to other European countries outside the EU.
