Enel and the Ansaldo Group form a joint venture to develop third-generation nuclear technology for Italian energy generation. The capital will consist of only three entities: the electricity group managed by Flavio Cattaneo, with a stake of more than 51%; the Ansaldo group, with a minority stake; and Leonardo, with a modest stake. The attempt to revive a technology in the country that had been halted by two referendums (in 1987 and 2011) is linked to the development of new, smaller, less expensive, and safer generation systems capable of producing vast amounts of power at competitive rates. Interest in this potential is not limited to Italy; countries such as Switzerland, which banned nuclear power in its constitution in 2017, are reconsidering. The United States is a key developer of SMR (Small Modular Reactors) technology. Three operators are working on several projects: GE Hitachi, NuScale Power, and Westinghouse. The technology developed by the latter may pique Italian interest due to its advanced stage and lower costs; however, it will be up to the new company led by Enel to conduct all necessary in-depth studies to determine which technology will be used to build the plants in Italy.
