Biomethanol may soon be able to replace traditional fuels in maritime transport. In contrast, the journey to hydrogen is far more complicated. This is supported by chemical engineers, who form the AIDIC (Italian Association of Chemical Engineering). At a time when the shipping industry is contemplating the fuel that will be required for the construction of new ships in order to comply with EU and IMO (International Maritime Organization) regulations, the association has clarified that only one small sector, agricultural biogas producers, is currently capable of meeting the entire fuel demand of the Italian maritime market at a price accessible to shipowners. Italy is the first country in Europe to have a plant, located in Umbria, that produces biomethanol starting from biogas.
