Italy is not a country for youth. First and foremost, it is not a young-people's country. On the contrary, it is the oldest country in Europe. According to Eurostat data, half of the Italian population is over the age of 48, with about a quarter over the age of 65. In summary, Italy's average age is 46.4 years. The younger demographic has fallen dramatically. In fact, there has been a 21% decrease in the number of people under the age of 35 over the last two decades. The phenomenon has primarily impacted women, resulting in a decrease of approximately 23%. Italy ranks far below the European average in terms of the proportion of its population that is young. This reality contributes to Italians' pessimism about the future of younger generations.
