In the two-year period 2022-2023, slightly less than 5% of Italian adults aged 18-69 were diagnosed with diabetes. The incidence of diabetes rises with age: it is 2% among individuals under the age of 50 and nearly 9% among those aged 50 to 69. It is more common in men than in women (5.3% and 4.4%, respectively) especially in socioeconomically disadvantaged groups of the population who are further disadvantaged by education or economic conditions. In fact, it is close to 16% for individuals with no educational degree or only an elementary school diploma, and it rises to 9% among those facing significant economic troubles. Geographic disparities are minimal, although the highest rates are observed in certain regions of Southern Italy.
