The video for Madonna's "Like a Virgin" was first broadcast on October 26, 1984, forty years ago. Directed by Mary Lambert, Louise Veronica Ciccone sings "Oh, like a virgin/ Touched for the very first time..." in poses and outfits that are at least as iconoclastic as the lyrics in tune, as she moves through the rooms of Palazzo Zenobio in Venice or takes a gondola ride through the canals. With a black jumpsuit and torn stockings, but most notably with the iconic and erotic wedding dress (now preserved at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square): a mesh bodice, a rebrodè embroidered tulle skirt with heart-shaped polka dots, fingerless lace gloves, and the well-known belt with the words "Boy Toy", all completed by a veil transforming the innocent symbolism of marriage into a manifesto of sexual emancipation. Who's idea was it? Maripol Fauque, then-creative director of Fiorucci America. This singular style exemplifies what Elio Fiorucci (1935–2015) represented for the global fashion world: a cultural shift and a conceptual revolution that is now being commemorated by a major retrospective at the Triennale Milano (organized by Judith Clark, till 16.03). A must-see display for fashion enthusiasts.
