Following the first vote in the Chamber, the Highway Code reform is sent to the Senate with no revisions and might be passed decisively in the coming days. The new restrictions include tighter measures to fight drunk driving, such as the innovative alcohol lock (alcolock). The reform states that those who are stopped and tested positive for alcohol and have a previous record of driving under the influence of alcohol will be unable to consume alcoholic beverages before driving for two or three years, depending on the blood alcohol level detected. When renewing the license, the driver must pass a medical examination and, at his own expense, install an alcohol lock device that prevents the car from starting if the blood alcohol level is not zero. Repeat offenses will lead to fines increased by a third, and tampering with the device will result in doubled penalties.
