The Tuscan coast, which is one of the most beautiful and delicate in Europe due to the abundance of marine flora and fauna, is facing the nightmare of an environmental disaster. On the evening of Tuesday, January 28, a Cypriot-flagged cargo ship ran aground at Marina di Massa pier, causing significant damage. The disaster was caused by the force of the sea, which resulted in the captain of the vessel, which was approximately 100 meters in length, losing control. It must now be determined whether and how much fuel from the ship ended up in the sea. "We are not yet able to provide a precise answer", acknowledges Massa Mayor Francesco Persiani, "but we are concerned that some of the fuel has ended up in the water. We could smell a strong odor of diesel last night, immediately after the grounding, when approaching the ship. Unfortunately, current sea conditions do not allow us to determine the depth of the breach. We will see; all specialized forces are on the scene; nothing will be left to chance." The most significant damage was to the panoramic roundabout at the end of the tourist walkway over the sea, which was completely destroyed.
