The new Terna Innovation Zone, Africa's first innovation hub run by the Italian corporation that manages the electrical grid, has opened in Tunis. The new center will host open innovation and acceleration programs, allowing Tunisian startups to gain access to resources, skills, and opportunities sourced from Terna's global network of collaborations in various international innovation ecosystems, as well as benefit from the Italian group's technical know-how. The initial step in this direction will involve the initiation of a "call for startups" in February, followed by the establishment of a scaling program that is specifically designed for the most innovative Tunisian startups that are involved in sectors related to the energy and digital transition. The Tunisian Terna Innovation Zone will train and develop engineers and technicians in the energy sector. The purpose is to prepare a new generation of professionals in the field. The proposal is tied to the massive Elmed infrastructure project, the first direct current electrical connection between Europe and Africa, which includes the building of a 200-kilometer submarine cable between Italy and Tunisia.
