Interregional healthcare mobility in Italy reached a record level of 5.04 billion in 2022, an increase of 18.6% over the previous year. The data, compiled by the Gimbe Foundation, show a growing phenomenon of Italians moving from one region to another for health reasons, with northern Italy confirmed as the main destination for those seeking medical care. Lombardy, Emilia Romagna and Veneto together collect 94.1% of the positive balance of these expenditures, demonstrating the centrality of these regions in the national healthcare landscape. In particular, Lombardy continues to be the favorite destination for patients from other regions, followed closely by Emilia Romagna and Veneto. In contrast, Southern Italy has a significant negative balance, with Abruzzo, Calabria, Campania, Sicily, Lazio and Puglia together accounting for 78.8% of outgoing healthcare resources to the North. This imbalance between North and South highlights a growing disparity in opportunities for access to care, with the South paying the highest price in terms of economic resources allocated to health.
