In 2025, the trade, catering, and accommodation industries will be unable to recruit 258 thousand employees. A level higher than in 2024 (+4%), indicating a true emergency because it threatens reducing the economic growth of the sectors under consideration as well as the gross product of the entire Italian economic system. Some of the most challenging professional figures to locate in the industry include professional salesmen (fashion-clothing sector) and specialized figures, such as butchers, gastronomes, and fish workers, in the food retail sector; waiters, bartenders, cooks/pizza makers, and ice cream makers in the catering sector; and cooks, waiters, and those responsible for cleaning and tidying up the rooms in the accommodation facilities. Considering the already unsatisfactory growth prospects and the widespread uncertainties and vulnerabilities characterizing the international scenario—most recently, the threat of U.S. tariffs—the issue of finding qualified workers is a luxury that the Italian economy cannot afford.
