From medications to food, and even chemicals: these are some of the main causes of the 500,000 cases of poisoning and intoxication that occur every year in Italy. Medications are responsible for about 50% of the cases, followed by domestic products such as caustic and corrosive compounds (bleach, muriatic acid, sink drain cleaners), which account for 29-30%. Food causes 5-6% of poisoning and intoxication cases, with a peak in fall due to the intake of mushrooms, but also berries, roots, and vegetables. Among these, approximately 40 documented cases of botulism occur each year, a very deadly intoxication caused by botulinum toxin, one of the most powerful poisons in the world, with often serious effects necessitating intensive care unit admission. Finally, another 5-6% of intoxications are caused by drug usage, specifically the so-called "new psychoactive substances", which are over a thousand compounds that are quickly spreading through the online market. Approximately 30-40% of poisonings involve youngsters.
