As the Meloni government considers transforming Albania's Shengjin and Gjader centers into CPRs (Centers of Permanence for Repatriation), workers at the facilities are facing layoffs. In fact, the Medihospes cooperative, winner of the €133 million contract to run the centers, has reportedly severed relations with most of the staff. According to a letter circulated by Il Domani paper, Medihospes justifies the decision with “contradictory judicial pronouncements” and the current impossibility of accepting new flows of migrants. The communication reportedly came from the branch opened in Tirana after the contract was awarded. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi assured that the centers will not be emptied, but did not comment on the layoffs.
