Within the next few months, thirty giant tortoises that were seized in the Seychelles six years ago will be returned to their country of origin. In 2019, thirty specimens of tortoises were discovered in the baggage of illicit traffickers at Barcelona Airport. It took six years to address the situation, but the specimens stolen when they were just a few months old will now be allowed to return home. The agreement has been finalized with the Parco Natura Viva of Bussolengo, in the province of Verona (Veneto), the official delegate of the government of the Republic of Seychelles for conservation activities in Europe, and the departure is scheduled for this summer. Camillo Sandri, zoological director of the Verona nature park, adds that "in total, 70 specimens were stolen. However, due to the difficulty of the transfer processes, we are only able to bring home 30. Six years ago, several were placed in Spanish rescue centers and zoological parks. They will now depart from there and once disembarked, will spend the quarantine period at the National Botanical Garden on Mahè before returning to their natural habitat".
