The Ustica tragedy appears to have no clear perpetrators. The Rome prosecutor's office has requested the dismissal of the most recent investigation into the DC-9 Itavia, which crashed in the Tyrrhenian Sea on the evening of June 27, 1980, with 81 individuals aboard. According to sources from the daily La Repubblica, the magistrates corroborated the scenario of the air fight, while ruling out the theory of an onboard bomb. However, it was impossible to determine the nationality of the fighters flying over Ustica, nor to identify those guilty for the downing of the aircraft flying from Bologna to Palermo. Despite numerous international letters of inquiry, particularly with France and the United States, and the testimonies gathered, the investigation has run into the lack of transparency of the countries involved, which would have provided incomplete and, in some cases, misleading information.
