Liguria is the region that has achieved the greatest success in lowering CO2 emissions, with a 65% decline between 1990 and 2024, well exceeding the European aim of a 55% reduction by 2030. Veneto and Puglia follow, with reductions of 35% and 34%, respectively. Despite significant progress, many regions, particularly in the South, remain far from meeting the goals set for 2030. In terms of renewable energy sources, Northern Italy is at the forefront. Lombardy, for example, installed over 39 kW/km² of renewable plants in 2023, which is more than double the national average. Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia followed suit. Valle d'Aosta has been certified as the most virtuous region, with renewable energy accounting for almost 96% of total consumption, followed by Trentino-Alto Adige and Basilicata. Renewable Energy Communities, which have seen significant growth in recent years, are led by Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto, and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, which top the rankings with the highest number of active RECs. The Centre-South Regions are distinguished by their comparatively low energy consumption, with Campania confirming its status as the most cost-effective, followed by Sicily and Calabria. These findings are partly due to good meteorological circumstances that lessen the requirement for energy.
