In 2024, each Italian repaid debts averaging 277 euros (-0.2% from the previous year). At the same time, there was a widening of the number of adult citizens with a mortgage or loan to 59.1%, up 12.8% from the previous year. The outstanding amount is 31,653 euros. In terms of the type of loans most popular among Italian households, the analysis shows in first place are purpose loans (intended for the purchase of goods and services such as cars, motorcycles, electronics and household appliances, furniture items, etc.), which come close to 50% of the total and record an average installment of 134 euros. In second place are personal loans, with a 28.9% share (+1.6%) and an average installment of 252 euros. Finally, the component of home purchase loans stands at 23.5% of the total (-1.1%) and records an average installment of 591 euros. The mortgage figure highlights the importance that home ownership still holds in Italy.
