For years, income level surveys have shown that families with foreign members are the most affected by poverty in Italy. The Covid-19 pandemic has widened an already considerable divide, which has grown even in recent years despite a positive employment scenario for both Italians and immigrants. In general, the 2023 Istat survey estimated that nearly 5.7 million individuals are living in absolute poverty, which is equivalent to 9.7% of the population. In this context, 1.7 million expatriates are affected by this condition, with an individual incidence of 35.1%, which is more than four and a half times higher than that of Italians (7.4%). Absolute poverty affects 8.4% of families but rises to 35.1% in those with all foreigners and falls to 6.3% when only Italians are present. Among the latter, the value stayed unchanged from 2022, when it increased by half a percentage point over the previous year. On the other hand, the prevalence of absolute poverty in families with immigrants continues to rise.
