San Massimo, a village in the province of Campobasso surrounded by a crown of majestic mountains, offers spectacular views of the Biferno Valley and the Matese Massif. Within its territory, in fact, are Mount Miletto and the Campitello Matese plateau with its grasslands and Gallinola ridges, making San Massimo an essential tourist destination for skiers and hikers. The surrounding countryside, then, is enriched by typical rural dwellings, which through arcades and towers used as dovecotes tell of Molise's rural past. Probably founded as a medieval settlement, when the town was known simply as “Castello” in reference to the fortified fortress that dominated it, San Massimo has faced several challenges over the centuries, such as the earthquakes of 1456 and 1805, which caused severe damage to the buildings. Today, however, it can still boast of numerous tourist attractions, such as the fountain in Via Roma, the Three Fountains, the monument to Enzo Manfredi Selvaggi, the castle ruins, Palazzo Manfredi-Selvaggi, Palazzo Piccirilli, the Chapel of San Rocco, and numerous historic churches. The town also offers an opportunity to learn more about Molise's cultural roots, particularly for those like returning emigrants who want to find out more about their homeland and ancestors. There are many events that enliven the village throughout the year, much of it related to religious holidays. First and foremost is the procession on the second Sunday in September to travel to the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie to celebrate Santa Maria, Santa Lucia and San Giovanni. It is also worth attending the Mountain Festival in Campitello Matese during the summer and the Castagnata in October. During the summer there is also the gastronomic route through the alleys of the village, while December is always accompanied by the Christmas markets. Among the specialties to be tasted are those made with chestnuts (which are very present in the surrounding forests), mushrooms, truffles, the “m'baniccia” of vegetables and sweetcorn pizza, and pork with pickled peppers and onions. All that is left to do is to reach San Massimo and enjoy its hospitality, unspoiled nature and the scenic beauty of Molise.
