Life expectancy in the EU reached 81.4 years in 2023, surpassing the pre-Covid level, albeit with significant disparities across countries. In fact, whereas a person in Switzerland may expect to live 84.3 years, in Spain 84, and in Italy 83.5 years, life expectancy in Lithuania and Bulgaria (at the bottom of the table) is 75.6 and 75.8 years, respectively. This is what Eurostat's data shows. In addition to differences between countries, differences can also be seen inside the same nation. The EU region with the highest life expectancy at birth was Spain’s Comunidad de Madrid (86.1 years), followed by the Autonomous Province of Trento in Italy (85.1 years), Åland in Finland (85.1 years), Comunidad Foral de Navarra in Spain, and the Autonomous Province of Bolzano/Bozen in Italy (both at 85 years). In Italy, however, Campania, Sicily, and Calabria have the lowest life expectancy (81.6 years, 81.8 years, and 81.1 years, respectively). Other regions below the national average (83.5) include Piedmont, Lazio, Sardinia, Puglia, Abruzzo, Basilicata, and Molise.
