Political tensions are back on the Albania case, following Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi's statements in an interview with La Stampa newspaper. The minister explained that the Gjader and Shengjin centers, built to house migrants picked up in the Mediterranean but currently empty, could be converted into CPRs (Centers of Permanence for Repatriation) to facilitate the deportation of those who have no right to remain in Italy. Piantedosi's words sparked the opposition, which speaks of an admission of failure. Democratic Party secretary Elly Schlein called the project a "disaster foretold", accusing the government of wasting nearly a billion euros on an "inhumane" protocol that would trample on basic rights and fail before it even went into operation. Schlein also called on the Meloni government to acknowledge the mistake and apologize to citizens.
