In 2021, Matteo Renzi, against everyone’s advice, selected Mario Draghi to lead the government by dismissing Giuseppe Conte's second cabinet, and won the bet by bringing the banker to Palazzo Chigi. He is now seeking to replicate his success in Europe by proposing that the former president of the ECB serve as the EU's representative in negotiations with US President Donald Trump regarding tariffs and other matters. "These are difficult times, and the European Union must begin speaking with one voice", argues Italia Viva's leader. "A special envoy is required for negotiations with Trump. Draghi is an authoritative, credible, and strong leader. Brussels should ask him to deal with Trump on behalf of all of Europe". However, the path to bringing Draghi into the field is an uphill one. Draghi would be the best person to deal with Trump with a straight face but without excessive rigidity; nevertheless, assuming that the EU agrees and that the former President of the ECB is accessible, the path is fraught with jealousy and personal grudges. “We do not need special envoys", immediately responded Antonio Tajani, leader of Forza Italia and Italy’s Foreign Minister.
