In 2024, the second-hand economy in Italy impacted 27.2 million individuals who purchased or sold used items. Individual second-hand trade is becoming increasingly digital, with online sites and platforms outperforming traditional markets last year in terms of sales. Objects, products, clothing, vehicles and motorcycles, sporting goods, and a thousand other items, excluding real estate, were exchanged online for 14.4 billion, which equals 54% of the market's value. This represents a 4 percentage point increase from 2023, the year of break-even. In 2014, only 5.4 billion euros came from online sales out of a total of 18 billion. As a result, internet sales drive the overall growth in the value of this sector, with 69% of Italians having purchased or sold pre-loved items online. The decisive factor remains the need to save money.
