From 2018 to 2022, the cut allocated to animal care out of the total expenditures of Italian households has increased by 35%, with major impacts on the entire pet supply chain. Households spend nearly 7 billion euros per year on the care of their pets. Of this, as much as 57% is spent on food purchases, 26% on veterinary medical expenses, and the remaining 17% on accessories. According to the first previews of the Nomisma study center research dedicated to pet owners, the dog is the animal to which most of the cut is allocated. According to the profile drawn by the research institute, the pet owner is over 45 years old, belongs to a household with cohabiting children, and in most cases has a house with an outdoor space, a garden or a balcony. A survey by SWG for Royal Canin shows that half of the pets in Italy have been adopted, with one-third of dogs being purchased, and one-third of cats found on the street instead.
