Italians' perceived inflation is 9.9%, a figure that is almost eight percentage points higher than the actual inflation rate, which came in April at 2% year-on-year. The consequence is that 1 in 2 Italians have reduced their consumption in the past six months to cope with rising prices. In addition, 61% believe that their salaries or pensions are inadequate to meet the cost of living, and 2 out of 3 people think that because of tariffs and the trade war that may ensue, prices will rise further in the coming months. These are the results of a survey conducted for the newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore between April 22 and 28 last year. Perceived inflation always exceeds real inflation, but the gap between the two values has never been larger. The goods for which Italians feel the heaviest increases are those related to housing: water, electricity and fuels. For this item, the perceived inflation rate rises to 16.4%, while the real one stops at 5%.
