The Conclave is now just a step away. Tomorrow, May 7, in the afternoon, will come the moment of the ‘Extra Omnes’ (“everyone out”) pronounced by the Master of Pontifical Liturgical Celebrations, Mons. Diego Giovanni Ravelli. An historic phrase that will mark the locking, cum clave, of the Sistine Chapel. As a result, separated from the rest of the world, the 133 cardinal electors will begin voting to elect the Successor of Peter, called to lead the Catholic Church. Yesterday, two general congregations were held. The first, in the morning, was attended by 179 cardinals, 132 of whom were electors, while the eleventh General Congregation, in the afternoon, was attended by 170 cardinals, 132 of whom were electors, according to Matteo Bruni, director of the Holy See Press Office. This morning at 9 a.m. marked the twelfth pre-Conclave Congregation of cardinals. It is expected to be the last before the Conclave begins. Yesterday morning, twenty-six speeches were delivered on a variety of subjects, including canon law, the missionary nature of the Church, the function of the Vatican City State, and the defense of the poor. And there were plenty of "references to Pope Francis, the signs of his pontificate, and the many processes that have begun". The expectation is for a pontiff close to the people, who will “face the challenge of faith, creation, and war in a fragmented world” such as ours. Around twenty interventions took place in the afternoon as well. Among the issues discussed were refugees "as a gift and how to support them in the faith," as well as the theme of war, with interventions by cardinals from battle zones, , along with reflections on the Synod and support for the new Pope in the major challenges facing some regions of the world. Also yesterday, the drawing of lots for the cardinals’ accommodations during the Conclave took place. They will all be staying in Santa Marta or Santa Marta Vecchia. They will be allowed to occupy their rooms as early as this morning and until Wednesday morning, prior to the "Pro Eligendo Pontifice" Mass, scheduled at 10 a.m. in St. Peter's Square and will be presided over by Card. Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals.
