"Cardinal electors don’t need a formal summons to attend, as they are admitted 'de jure' to the Conclave". This was said this morning by Matteo Bruni, director of the Vatican Press Office, in response to a query about Card. John Ndje of Kenya, who stated in an interview that he was not present not due to health issues, but because he was not invited. The cardinal was also turned down by the apostolic nunciature in Kenya. The cardinal "has been officially invited", but "due to his current health conditions, he is unable to travel to Rome and participate in the Conclave", said the Archbishop of Nairobi, Monsignor Philip Anyolo, refuting what Cardinal Njue had stated in an interview with the Daily Nation. According to the registry office, Card. Ndje is 80 years old, but reports suggest he is actually 81. He had his date of birth corrected recently, on his directions, in the pontifical yearbook.
