Italy is preparing to become the first country in the world with a law dedicated to the prevention and treatment of obesity. The Chamber of Deputies approved Roberto Pella's bill with 155 votes in favor, 103 abstentions, and none against. The Senate is currently reviewing the text, which acknowledges obesity as a disease and establishes the incorporation of related treatments in the Essential Assistance Levels (LEA), which are funded by the National Health Service. The measure takes a comprehensive strategy that encompasses prevention, treatment, and awareness-raising. Already in December, a special fund of one million euros per year for the three-year period 2025-2027 was formed, to which Forza Italia donated additional resources: 200 thousand euros in 2025, 300 thousand in 2026, and 700 thousand in 2027. In Italy, approximately 12% of the adult population (almost six million people) is obese, with an additional 40% being overweight. Even among the youngest, the situation is critical: one in every three children has weight problems, in line with the European average.
