Milan has secured second place in the global ranking of the best cities to explore on foot, surpassed only by Munich. The list was created by the Australian website 'Compare the Market', which examined numerous characteristics relevant to tourists who prefer to travel without a vehicle. Criteria assessed included the length of cycle paths, the expansion of pedestrian areas, the closeness of key services, safety, and the cost of public transportation. This combination of factors placed the Lombard capital on the podium, ahead of cities like Warsaw, which ranked third. Munich gained first position due, among other things, to its extensive pedestrian network: 86% of residents live within one kilometer of a car-free zone, and 85% have schools and health facilities less than a kilometer away. Despite high public transportation costs, the German metropolis remains one of the safest in the world for pedestrians.
