On the day Pisa returns to Serie A after 34 years, perhaps it is worth looking back at the 1990/91 team, filled with names destined to become cult status. Of course, the face that stands out is that of Diego Pablo Simeone: the legendary Atletico Madrid coach arrived in Pisa in the very summer of 1990 from Veléz Sarsfield. Simeone was just one of the many brilliant intuitions of Romeo Anconetani, the Pisa President after whom the Arena Garibaldi city stadium is now named. In fact, Anconetani allowed the Tuscan club to live its golden age: after the first season in Serie A in 1968 and the prompt return to Serie B, it was Anconetani himself who brought the Nerazzurri back to the top division. In those Serie A years, Pisa managed to attract top players such as Klaus Berggreen, Wim Kieft (Golden Shoe 1982), Brazilian Dunga, and also quality Italians, such as Michele Padovano or Alessandro Calori. On the bench, leading that team, was a 45-year-old Mircea Lucescu, in his first experience as a coach outside his native Romania. Although Anconetani had assembled a good squad, Pisa collected only 22 points in 34 games, which led to relegation to Serie B. It took a full 30 years for a new American ownership, led by Alexander Knaster, to put Pisa back on the Serie A map.
