The Italian labor market is changing and young people are an increasingly scarce resource. According to the findings of a meeting sponsored by Unioncamere and Almalaurea, between 2011 and 2024 Italy lost one million people in the 18-34 age group, with obvious consequences also on the youth entrepreneurship front. During the period under consideration, businesses led by under-35s declined by 31 percent, and the share of new start-ups by young people dropped from 34.6% in 2011 to 27.8% in 2024. Underlying the decline is not only declining demographics, but also the increasing difficulties in setting up one's own business, amid bureaucracy and the demand for increasingly complex skills - technological, managerial and financial. At the same time, however, employed youth employment has increased: between 2015 and 2024 there will be 640,000 more workers between the ages of 15 and 34, mostly with full-time contracts. This was pointed out by Unioncamere Secretary General Giuseppe Tripoli, stressing the need to strengthen orientation and pathways to the world of work.
