"Sometimes a bishop risks focusing only on the local dimension. However, a bishop should have a much broader vision of the Church and reality, as well as experiencing its universality. He must also be able to listen to others and seek counsel, as well as possess psychological and spiritual maturity. A key element in the portrait of a bishop is being a pastor, capable of staying close to the members of the community". The successor to Bergoglio on the Chair of Saint Peter comes from the United States: Robert Francis Prevost, since 2023 Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, has chosen the name Leo XIV. He is the first Augustinian Pope and the second American Pontiff after Francis, however unlike Bergoglio, he was born in the north of the continent and served as pastor in the south. Prevost was born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 14, 1955, to Louis Marius Prevost of French and Italian origin and Mildred Martínez of Spanish descent. He has two brothers: Louis Martín and John Joseph. He spent his youth and adolescence in the United States, first attending the Augustinian Fathers' Minor Seminary and later Villanova University in Pennsylvania, where he obtained a degree in Mathematics and Philosophy in 1977. He entered the Order of St. Augustine's novitiate in 1977 and took solemn vows in 1981. He was ordained a priest in 1982 and obtained a licentiate in canon law from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in 1984, followed by a doctorate in 1987. He served as a missionary in Peru from 1985 to 1986 and 1988 to 1998, where he held positions of formation and instruction at the Augustinian seminary of Trujillo and the diocesan major seminary. He speaks Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and French and focuses on the marginalized and migrants, particularly in Peru.
