Domestic labor in Italy officially employs 833,874 regular workers, accounting for more than 4% of the total employment. However, Istat figures are significantly different, with over 1.7 million workers in total, over half of them, around 800,000, work informally, that is, without a paycheck or corresponding contributions. With an irregularity rate nearing 50%, domestic work is the sector with the highest incidence of undeclared labor, contributing 27% to the national underground economy. Additionally, domestic employment in Italy has a significant gender connotation: in 2023, 88.6% of individuals employed in the field were female. Domestic workers have a high average age: 51.5 years, with caretakers having the highest average (53 years) and slightly lower averages among housekeepers (50 years). Only 9% of workers are under the age of 35, with over 60% above the age of 50. The main nationalities are Romanian (15%), Ukrainian (11%), Filipino (8%), Peruvian and Moldovan (both around 4%).
