A monk seal has been spotted in the sea of Ischia, near the Tower of Sant'Angelo. It was an exceptional sighting, as confirmed by Antonino Miccio, Director of the Marine Protected Area Regno di Nettuno: “It was filmed feeding on a moray eel, very close to the coast”. The scene was captured by a boatman from the cab boat service that connects the village to the island's beaches and coves. Although Ischia's sea is increasingly the scene of encounters with rare marine species, this would appear to be the first documented sighting of a monk seal in the area. In recent days the animal had already been reported in Massa Lubrense and Capri, fueling curiosity and attention. Managers of the Marine Protected Area have issued some recommendations: in case of an encounter, it is essential to keep your distance, avoid noise or sudden movements and do not attempt any kind of interaction. The monk seal is in fact a protected and endangered species: the law prohibits not only the capture and killing, but also the simple disturbance of the animal.
