Pope Leo XIV has chosen to keep alive the Holy See's presence on social media, continuing the path started by his predecessors. As confirmed by the Dicastery for Communication, the new Pontiff will continue to use the official accounts @Pontifex on X (formerly Twitter) and @Pontifex - Pope Leo XIV on Instagram, in continuity with those managed by Pope Francis and, before that, Pope Benedict XVI. The @Pontifex accounts, active in nine languages (including English, Spanish, Italian and Latin), currently reach about 52 million followers worldwide. Content from Pope Francis' pontificate will soon be archived in a dedicated section of the official Vatican.va website. On Instagram, however, the @Franciscus account will remain visible as an “Ad Memoriam” memorial archive. In his first post on Instagram, Pope Leo XIV wrote: "Peace be with you all! This is the first greeting of the Risen Christ, the Good Shepherd. I too would like this greeting of peace to enter your hearts, to reach your families, all people, wherever they are, all peoples, the whole earth". The Popes' presence on social media began on December 12, 2012 with Pope Benedict XVI, who inaugurated the @Pontifex account on Twitter. Later, Pope Francis expanded digital communication with the launch of the Instagram account @Franciscus on March 19, 2016. In more than a decade, the two popes' posts have generated millions of daily interactions. During Francis' pontificate alone, there were about 50,000 posts, and in 2020 alone, a year marked by the pandemic, his posts were viewed 27 billion times.
