From the Cotec summit in Coimbra, Portugal, President Sergio Mattarella issues a clear call to action, blaming hesitations that have hindered European integration, particularly in the defense sector. "The European Common Defence well exemplifies the consequences of inaction and unjustified reluctance", he said, recalling that member states have been debating the matter for more than seven decades. "We are late, chasing events, and we must feel the urgency", he pointed out. In order to fortify the concept, Mattarella referenced the renowned romance Nessun dorma from Puccini's Turandot, which was performed at the summit shortly before: "It could apply to our union," he remarked, emphasizing the importance of not wasting time. In his speech, Mattarella also mentioned former Prime Minister Mario Draghi, who was present in Coimbra: "His report on the future of European competitiveness is already helping to guide the Commission's policies". According to the Head of State, a new Europe must be "more competitive, more resilient, and more present on the international chessboard". Finally, a message of confidence: "The Union is built on strong foundations: a market economy, the rule of law, a democratic system, and solidarity policies. This is why we must be proud of our European exceptionality and continue to build on these assumptions".
