Pope Leo XIV's first appointment concerns Peru. In fact, yesterday morning the Pontiff chose the new auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Callao: he is Father Miguel Ángel Contreras Llajaruna, currently episcopal vicar for Consecrated Life of the diocese and Superior of the América del Sur District of the Marist Fathers. Born July 5, 1979, in Cajabamba, Cajamarca region, Contreras undertook religious formation at the Marist Fathers' seminary in Sullana-Piura. He studied Philosophy in Lima and Theology in Mexico, then continued his formation with a master's degree in Sacred Scripture in Brazil and a master's degree in Educational Management and Leadership in Peru. Ordained a priest in 2008, he has carried out an intense pastoral and educational ministry: he has been promoter of the San José parochial school in Callao, pastor of the Virgen Misionera community and general director of the diocese's network of parochial schools. The appointment represents the new Pope's first official act and confirms the Holy See's concern for the ecclesial communities of South America.
